Touch Down: May 6, 2014

First things first: the 2014 Summer I Dialogue of Civilizations: China has arrived safely in Beijing. For the nine of us who came from Boston, it was a long trip (to say the least: approximately 17 hours of travel, BOS to PEK). For the six who joined us during our Newark layover, it was almost as grueling (approximately 14 hours). I can't speak for the final three students who met us in Beijing from other points of origin, but it can be assumed that they will be just as jet-lagged as the rest of us.

We're now in our Beijing hotel, about to go out for our first group dinner. As tired as we all are, you can sense the excitement in the group. Everybody wants to get out and explore.

There isn't really a reason to go into a whole lot more detail here. I'll leave that to the students, who will be writing these blog entries for the next five weeks. Throughout our four days in Beijing, 28 in Nanjing (including three days at Yellow Mountain in Anhui province) and four in Shanghai, you can expect to read – and see – our students' perspectives on our experiences as they volunteer to contribute posts. In past years this blog has served simultaneously as an effective outlet for student voices and a window into our Dialogue for friends and family back home, and we expect that this year will be no different.

On a logistical note, it will take at least a day or two for students to get their bearings, buy phone cards and find sources of internet. Keep that in mind as you wait for individual communications to start coming in.

On behalf of Professor Dong Hua, myself and the 2014 Dialogue, thanks for reading. We hope you'll check back here soon.

Sincerely,
Alex Rosenblatt
